Originally previewed as coming to the App Store, earlier this year – Apple’s Swift Playgrounds is now available to download by anyone who wishes to start learning the basics of how to code for iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Announced alongside the first-ever public demos of iOS 10, tvOS 10, watchOS 3 and macOS Sierra, Apple noted that its new Swift Playgrounds app would let even the coding beginner learn how to seriously code on their iPad.
“Technology has a language. It’s called code. And we believe coding is an essential skill. Learning to code teaches you how to solve problems and work together in creative ways. And it helps you build apps that bring your ideas to life.
We think everyone should have the opportunity to create something that can change the world. So we’ve designed a new approach to coding that lets anyone learn, write, and teach it.”
Apple’s hope with Swift Playgrounds is that it will further simply the often thought ‘complex’ process of learning to code, instead making the practice accessible to almost anyone with an iPad.
We made a coding language for everyone.
We designed Swift to be easy to use. It lets you see what you’re creating with code as you write it. Type your code on the left and immediately see the result on the right. It uses lots of words and phrases you already know, like “print,” “add,” and “remove.”
And Swift is not just great for getting started with code — it’s also super powerful. In fact, some of the world’s most popular apps are created in Swift.
Swift Playgrounds is a FREE download on the App Store.
